Lake Skadar is one of Montenegro's most beautiful landmarks, and on this half-day tour, you'll have the opportunity to explore it almost in its entirety! To help you envision what this tour entails, we've outlined some basic information about it, as well as the course of the tour.
Our journey typically starts from Virpazar as we head towards the enchanting island of Beška, known for its two 14th-century monasteries and as the home to 14 nuns who reside on the island year-round. This is just the beginning of our adventure on Lake Skadar.
Being a significant religious center in the Skadar Lake region, the island carries immense historical and cultural significance. The hospitable nuns take pride in their rich knowledge of the island's heritage and gladly share it with visitors, guiding them on a tour. In addition to its religious significance, the island of Beška on Lake Skadar is known for its diverse population of wild birds, including eagles, herons, and cormorants. This island oasis provides a safe haven and ideal conditions for the nesting of many bird species, making it an extremely important ornithological area.
Cruising on the open lake allows us to pass by landmarks such as Grmožur, known as the Montenegrin Alcatraz, and the fishing village of Raduš, but we don't linger. Besides serving as a prison, Grmožur was also a strategic military fortress in the past. This fortress was built to protect Lake Skadar from potential attacks and was a crucial part of defending that area. Today, visitors can explore these impressive remains and learn more about the rich history and significance of Grmožur on Lake Skadar. This is the part of our adventure where we enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Lake Skadar without any obligations.
Behind the island where the Beška monastery is located lies Murici Beach, where we can take a break for swimming if you wish. As Murici Beach on Lake Skadar is known for its untouched beauty and crystal-clear water, this is the perfect opportunity to refresh yourself and enjoy the charms of the crystal-clear waters of Lake Skadar.
After enjoying the panoramic views and visiting the Beška Monastery, we return to our starting point - Virpazar. This boat ride through Lake Skadar leaves us with beautiful memories and a sense of satisfaction from exploring this jewel of Montenegro.
